Information About Certifications Transitioning to Licensure
Dietetics/Nutrition certifications expire on May 31, 2009. Effective June 21, 2009, the law requires licensure in order to practice Dietetics/Nutrition in Delaware.
The online or paper renewal application that you submit during the 2009 renewal will be considered an application for licensure under the new law. A renewed certification will automatically transition to licensure effective 6/21/2009.
If you hold a Delaware certification, a renewal notice will be mailed to the address on your record several weeks before your license expiration date. This notice will explain how to access the online renewal application. To complete the online renewal application, you must use a credit card to pay your renewal fee. The notice will also explain how to request a paper renewal application if you are unable to renew online.
Please keep your contact information in our records up-to-date so that notices we send will reach you. To check and update your contact information online, click here.
Information About Continuing Education (CE) for 2009 Renewal
In 2008, the expiration date of Dietetics/Nutrition certification was changed from 9/30 to 5/31 of odd-numbered years to align Delaware’s renewal period with the national organization’s renewal period. Due to the shortened license period between the 2008 and 2009 renewals, the CE requirement for Dietitians/Nutritionist whose Delaware certification was issued before 10/1/2008 will be 25 hours instead of 30 hours. For complete information about the CE requirements, refer to Section 3.0 of the Rules and Regulations.
How to Renew a Lapsed Certification
If you do not renew your certification by 5/31/2009, your certification will lapse and your certification will not automatically transition to licensure effective 6/21/2009. If your certification lapses…
- you may continue practicing in Delaware from 6/1/2009 through 6/20/2009 but you are not permitted to represent yourself as a certified dietitian/nutritionist or use the letters CDN during this period
- it will become illegal for you to practice Dietetics/Nutrition in Delaware or represent yourself as a certified or licensed dietitian/ nutritionist without a license starting on 6/21/2009.
You may renew for a period of one year after the expiration date by submitting a renewal application online, paying a late fee and attesting to completion of the required CE. When you complete the renewal process, your certification will transition to a license. However, if you have not renewed by 5/31/2010, you must file an application to reapply as a new applicant under the new licensure law.
