Applying to Sit for the Exam

The Board of Electrical Examiners must approve you to sit for the examination. Click New License for instructions on applying for a license by examination.

When the Board has approved your application, the Board office will send you the examination registration form.

Registering for the Exam

Complete and submit the registration form and $90 examination fee to Prometric, the testing service.

The exams are given in February, May, August and October.

Passing the Exam

Starting March 1, 2010, all Electrical examinations will be based on the 2008 National Electrical Code (NEC). You must obtain a minimum score of 75% to pass the exam. After you pass, submit the following to the Board office:

  • copy of the examination results showing the passing score
  • proof of liability insurance of at least $300,000

Re-Taking the Exam

If you fail the exam and wish to re-take it, contact the Board office to request another registration form. However, if you fail two consecutive times with a grade of less than 50% each time, you must wait one year before re-testing. See Section 4.0 of the Board’s Rules and Regulations.

Note: Your re-examination will be on the 2008 NEC.
