License Renewal

Renewals for All Licenses

Funeral licenses expire on August 31 of even years (e.g., 2020, 2022)

A few months before the expiration date of your license, a renewal notice will be sent to the email address on the record. This notice will explain how to access your online renewal application in DELPROS, our online portal. To complete the online renewal application, you must log in to your account, answer questions, and use a credit card to pay your renewal fee.

All notices about professional licenses, such as renewal and audit notices, are sent by email only. It is important to keep your contact information up-to-date so that all the notices we send reach you. To check and update your contact information online, click on the Manage Profile or Facility link in DELPROS.

Renewing Active Funeral Directors Licenses

An active license must be renewed in DELPROS every two years before the expiration date. During renewal, you are asked to attest that you have completed the required continuing education units (CE).

For detailed information on the CE and Audit requirements, see the Continuing Education and Audit Information webpage or, see Section 9.0 of the Board’s Rules and Regulations.   After the renewal, a percentage of licensees are randomly selected for audit of their CE.

Note:  If you are a Funeral Director who is 65 or older, you are exempt from the CE requirement. Also, Funeral Director Limited licenses do not have a CE requirement.

Renewing Funeral Establishment Licenses

In addition to submitting the renewal application and fee for the establishment in DELPROS, you must also provide information about the establishment’s mailing and location addresses, managing funeral director, and ownership. It is illegal to operate a Funeral Establishment in Delaware while your license is expired.

Renewing Expired Licenses

If you do not complete renewal before the expiration date, your license will expire. It is illegal to practice as a Funeral Director in Delaware while your license is expired.

You may file a late renewal application for up to one year after the expiration date in DELPROS. You must pay a late fee in addition to the renewal fee. Even though you can file a late renewal application, it is illegal to practice or to operate an establishment in Delaware until the license is actually renewed. The late period is not a “grace period.”

If you fail to renew within one-year, your license will terminate. To resume practicing or operating an establishment in Delaware after termination, you must reapply in DELPROS as a new applicant.

Inactive & Reactivating Licenses

If you hold an active license but are not practicing in Delaware, you may request to place your license in inactive status by submitting a Service Request in DELPROS. You must request inactive status before your late renewal period ends (August 31 of following odd year). You must pay a status change fee to go inactive. You cannot practice in Delaware while your license is in inactive status. Your license may remain in inactive status for up to five years. You are not permitted to practice in Delaware while your license is inactive.

To resume practicing in Delaware during the five-year period, you must reactivate your license by submitting a Service Request in DELPROS. For more information on reactivating an inactive license, see 24 Del. C . §3111.

If you fail to reactivate during the five-year period, your license will terminate. If you wish to resume practicing after your license has terminated, you must reapply in DELPROS as a new applicant.
