Justice of the Peace (Magistrates) are appointed by the Governor of Delaware and confirmed by the Delaware Senate. The Governor’s Magistrate Screening Committee screens persons who are interested in being considered for possible appointment as Justices of the Peace.
The Magistrate Screening Committee gives public notice that the application process is now open for individuals who are interested in being considered for appointment as a justice to the Justice of the Peace Court. A justice of the peace is a full-time position that entails 8-hour rotating shifts to handle arraignments and other court proceedings on a 24-hour-day basis, including weekends and holidays. In addition to the magisterial functions, a justice of the peace also conducts trials and proceedings in both criminal and civil matters. The initial term is four years and the starting annual salary is $76,488. Each justice of the peace shall serve in the county in which they reside.
