Answers

I want to be a professional boxer or professional mixed martial arts practitioner. What do I need to do?

Answer: A manager, trainer or promoter can help develop you into a professional fighter. The Division of Professional Regulation does not provide guidance on career paths for combative sports. When you get your first match/bout, you must register with the boxing/athletic commission in the state (or other jurisdiction) where the event will take place. If the event will take place in Delaware, the Division of Professional Regulation will designate an agent in another jurisdiction and you will register there. This is because Delaware does not have a boxing/athletic commission.

I want to be an amateur boxer. What do I need to do?

Answer: Contact the Mid-Atlantic Boxing Association (USA Boxing) for information on how to register. The Division of Professional Regulation does not provide guidance on career paths for combative sports. A boxing trainer, boxing organization or community recreation center that engages in boxing activities can help you get started.

I want to be an amateur mixed martial arts practitioner. What do I need to do?

Answer: Check the phone book or internet for names of local mixed martial arts schools and/or promoters who will train and promote you at amateur mixed martial arts events. The Division of Professional Regulation does not provide guidance on career paths for combative sports.

How can I find out more about promoting professional boxing or professional mixed martial arts events in Delaware?

Answer: For information on professional mixed martial arts events in Delaware, see Professional MMA. For information on professional boxing events, contact Megan Miller.

I’m an amateur Mixed Martial Arts Promoter. How do I get started in Delaware?

Answer: The requirements are listed online under the Combative Sports Rules and Regulations for Amateur Mixed Martial Arts. To apply for a permit for an event, follow the instructions or applying in DELPROS, our online professional licensing system.

I would like to oversee or sanction mixed martial arts events in Delaware. Do I need a license?

Answer: No.  You are not required to be licensed. However, the Director of the Division of Professional Regulation must approve your organization before sanctioning any amateur event. To apply for approval to sanction amateur events, see Application for Approval to Sanction Mixed Martial Arts Events. See also Approved Sanctioning Bodies.

I just moved to Delaware and want to know of any local boxing gyms. Can you recommend any?

Answer: The Division of Professional Regulation does not recommend gyms. Check the local phone book for names of gyms operating in the Delaware or visit the Mid-Atlantic Boxing Association (USA Boxing) website for a list of gyms in Delaware and neighboring states.
