Continuing Education and Audit Information

Continuing Education Requirement

Active Occupational Therapy (OT) and Occupational Therapy Associate (OTA) Professionals must complete 24 hours of approved CE during each full licensure renewal period, which is between August 1 to July 31 even-numbered years (e.g. 2018, 2020) unless you are renewing for the first time and/or upgrading.

The amount of continuing education (CE) that you are required to complete depends on when your license was issued. If this is your first renewal, your CE is prorated and shown below.

If your license was issued:

    • before 12/1 of the prior even year (meaning there was a full 24 months or more remaining in the licensing renewal period), you must complete 24 CE hours
    • on or after 12/1 of the prior even year, but before 5/1 of the prior odd year, you must complete 15 CE hours
    • on or after 5/1 of the prior odd year, but before 10/1 of that same odd year, you are required to complete 10 CE hours
    • on or after 10/1 of the prior odd year, you don’t need any CE (0) for your first renewal.

If you upgraded to an OT license from an OTA on or after 12/1 of the prior even year, the required CE is the same amount that would have been required to renew your OTA license. (e.g. if you needed 10 CEs prior to upgrading, you are required to complete 10 CEs)

Many opportunities exist to obtain the required CE. A few examples are:

    • Course work
    • Independent study
    • Professional presentations
    • Teaching Occupational Therapy Courses
    • Serving on a professional Occupational Therapy board or organization
    • Fieldwork supervision

Maximum allowable hours and other restrictions may apply. For complete CE requirements and other information, see Section 3.0 of the Board’s Rules and Regulations.

Any continuing education provider can request approval by the Board of Occupational Therapy by submitting an outline of the activity as determined in the Rules and Regulations. Any continuing education that is sponsored or approved by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT), American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), or offered by AOTA-approved providers are automatically approved, subject to the maximum mentioned above.
