Elevator Mechanic




When To Apply

Use the below information to determine when you may apply for a license as a Elevator Mechanic by examination, experience, or reciprocity.

IF you… THEN you may apply by…
do NOT hold an active Elevator Mechanic license in another jurisdiction AND have already passed an examination through the Certified Elevator Technician Education Program (CET®) or the National Elevator Industry Educational Program (NEIEP®). Examination
do NOT hold an active Elevator Mechanic license in another jurisdiction AND have not passed an examination through CET® or NEIEP®, then you must meet one of the following requirements under the supervision of a licensed elevator mechanic:
  • Six years full-time experience, or
  • 8,000 hours of full-time experience and 576 hours of related instruction or approved training, or
  • Four years full-time experience and 6,000 hours of technical training.

Once the Board has approved your experience requirements, you will be made eligible to sit for the examination.

Experience
hold an active Elevator Mechanic license in good standing in another jurisdiction (state, District of Columbia or U.S. territory) whose standards are “substantially similar” to those of Delaware OR you have practiced a minimum of five years after licensure. Reciprocity


Information on How to Apply for a License in DELPROS

All applications are submitted in our online system DELPROS.

In order to apply for a license or submit a service request, you must first have a DELPROS user account. To LOG IN or CREATE a DELPROS (Delaware Professional Regulation Online Services) user account:

  1. Go to: https://delpros.delaware.gov/OH_HomePage.
  2. Click GO on the Apply/Manage a License and Service Requests tile.
  3. If you do not have a DELPROS user account, click the REGISTER button on the left side of page for NEW USERS.
  4. If you already have a DELPROS user account, enter your email address and password on the right side for EXISTING USERS and click the LOGIN button.

DELPROS allows you to save your incomplete application and return to it later to finish the process. You only have six (6) months to submit your application once you begin.

  • If you do not submit your application within six months of starting it, you will be required to restart the entire online application again.

You may check the status of your application online throughout the entire application process by using the “View Application Status” feature in DELPROS on your e-License dashboard.

  1. Know the requirements for the license you are pursuing.
  2. Request and gather all documents required to upload on the Attachments page. All information and forms are located on your profession’s webpages.
On the ATTACHMENTS page of your application, you may be instructed to:

  • either “attach” or “upload” the required document(s) directly to your application. This means you will find the document(s) saved on your computer or device and upload it to your application, or
  • click “acknowledge” . This means you will either have to mail the documents yourself or request the “third-party” mail the document(s) directly to the Board office.
    • Examples of “third-party forms” are transcripts from schools, an employment verification from a supervisor, or a license verification from another state.
  • Forms requiring a supervisor signature, seal, or notary may have to be MAILED to the Board office directly UNLESS the document specifically indicates to UPLOAD the document.

The requirements for this license type are provided in the following section(s).


Requirements for All Applicants

These item(s) are required for all applications, regardless of whether you are applying by examination, experience, or reciprocity. In addition to submitting the application and fee in DELPROS, you must submit:

  • State/Jurisdiction Licensure Verification(s), or Letter of Good Standing, sent directly to the Board office from each state or jurisdiction in which you currently hold or have ever held an elevator mechanic license.
    • If you have never held a license a verification of license or letter of good standing is not required.


Additional Requirements when Applying by…

In addition to submitting the application, fee, and supporting documentation required in the Requirements for All Applicants section above, you must also submit:

  • Education program instruction or training transcript or apprenticeship certificate showing proof of completion.
  • Verification of passing exam scores sent directly to the Board office.
In addition to submitting the application, fee, and supporting documentation required in the Requirements for All Applicants section above, you must also submit:

  • Verification of passing exam scores sent directly to the Board office.
  • Verification of Work Experience (employment) form completed under a licensed elevator mechanic showing proof that you have met one of the following experience requirements:
    • Six years of full-time experience
    • 8,000 hours of full-time experience AND 576 hours of related instruction, or other approved training verified by a certificate of completion of apprenticeship from a lawful, registered apprenticeship program of any state, or
    • Four years of full-time experience AND 6,000 hours of technical training
Depending on whether the state(s) in which you are licensed is substantially similar or not determines what additional item(s), if any, you are required to submit.

In addition to submitting the supporting documentation required in the Requirements for All Applicants section above, you must also submit:

  • A copy of the laws and regulations in each jurisdiction where you hold a current license as an elevator mechanic. The Board will determine if that jurisdiction’s license standards are substantially similar to Delaware’s license standards.
  • If the jurisdiction’s license standards where you hold a current elevator mechanic license is not substantially similar to Delaware, you must submit proof of having practiced for at least five years after licensure. Proof of practice is:
    • an employer’s notarized affidavit describing the nature of your experience, or
    • if a notarized affidavit from the employer cannot be obtained, you must submit a letter explaining why the experience affidavit cannot be obtained, and W-2 forms or other tax documents showing five years of full-time employment.
