Hearing Aid Dispenser

General Information

If you want to dispense hearing aids in Delaware, you must obtain a Delaware Hearing Aid Dispenser license, with the exception of Delaware-licensed Audiologists. The three ways to apply for licensure are described below. Once you determine which way you need to apply, review the requirements, gather your information, and apply in DELPROS, our online professional licensure system.

  • If you are just starting out and want to dispense hearing aids, you must first complete a six-month training period under supervision of a Delaware-licensed Hearing Aid Dispenser or Audiologist. You must get approved for a Temporary Hearing Aid Dispenser license before you begin your training period. (Training conducted before you obtain a Temporary license does not count toward your six-month training requirement.) The Temporary license is good for one year. When your supervisor verifies that you have successfully completed the training period, the Board will authorize you to take the national examination during the remaining six-months of the Temporary license.
  • If you have completed your Delaware training period and passed the national examination, you may apply for a permanent Hearing Aid Dispenser license by examination.
  • If you hold a current license in another jurisdiction (state, District of Columbia or U.S. territory), you may apply for a Hearing Aid Dispenser license by reciprocity based on one of the following:
    • You have five years experience in the practice of Hearing Aid Dispenser after licensure, or
    • You hold a current license in a jurisdiction where the licensure requirements are substantially similar to those of Delaware.
    • If you do not have the required five years of licensure, the Board must determine whether the licensure requirements in any jurisdiction where you hold a current license are substantially similar to those of Delaware.

Information on How to Apply for a License in DELPROS

All applications are submitted our online system DELPROS. We no longer accept paper applications.

PRIOR TO APPLYING

In order to apply for a license or submit a service request, you must first have a DELPROS user account. To LOG IN or CREATE a DELPROS (Delaware Professional Regulation Online Services) user account:

  1. Go to: https://delpros.delaware.gov/OH_HomePage.
  2. Click GO on the Apply/Manage a License and Service Requests tile.
  3. If you do not have a DELPROS user account, click the REGISTER button on the left side of page for NEW USERS.
  4. If you already have a DELPROS user account, enter your email address and password on the right side for EXISTING USERS and click the LOGIN button.

DELPROS allows you to save your incomplete application and return to it later to finish the process. You only have six (6) months to submit your application once you begin.

  • If you do not submit your application within six months of starting it, you will be required to restart the entire online application again.

You may check the status of your application online throughout the entire application process by using the “View Application Status” feature in DELPROS on your e-License dashboard.

KNOW YOUR REQUIREMENTS AND COLLECT YOUR DOCUMENTS

  1. Know the requirements for the license you are pursuing.
  2. Request and gather all documents required to upload on the Attachments page. All information and forms are located on your profession’s webpages.

ATTACHING AND ACKNOWLEDGING DOCUMENTS

On the ATTACHMENTS page of your application, you may be instructed to:

  • either “attach” or “upload” the required document(s) directly to your application. This means you will find the document(s) saved on your computer or device and upload it to your application.
  • click “acknowledge.” This means you will either have to mail the documents yourself or request the “third-party” mail the document(s) directly to the Board office.
    • Examples of “third-party forms” are transcripts from schools, employment verifications from a supervisor, and license verifications from another state.
  • Forms requiring a supervisor signature, seal, or notary may have to be MAILED to the Board office directly UNLESS the document specifically indicates to UPLOAD the document.

The requirements for this license type are provided in the following section(s).

Requirements for All Applicants

The following requirements apply to all applicants regardless of the type of license for which they are applying. In addition to submitting the application and fee in DELPROS, you must submit:

  • State/Jurisdiction Licensure Verification sent directly to the Board office from each state or jurisdiction in which you currently hold or have ever held a license.
  • A State of Delaware and Federal Bureau of Investigation criminal background check (CBC). Go to the Criminal Background Check Process page to find the Service Code required to obtain a State of Delaware and Federal Bureau of Investigation criminal background check. Once you have your Service Code, you will be directed to the IdentoGO website for instructions to complete the fingerprinting process.
    • Criminal background checks completed for any other purpose (e.g., employment, licensure in other states) will not meet this requirement.

Temporary Applicants

If you are applying for a Temporary license, the following items are required in addition to the items in the Requirements for All Applicants section above:

  • An official transcript, sent directly from your high school to the Board office, showing that you have a high school diploma, or
  • copy of your GED.
  • A Statement of Supervising Sponsor form signed by the person who will sponsor and supervise you while you are practicing under the Temporary license. If your supervisor changes, the new supervisor must submit a new form.
  • A complete Training Plan form signed both by you and your supervisor.
    • Your supervisor must be a Delaware-licensed Hearing Aid Dispenser or Audiologist.
    • Do not begin your training period until your Temporary license is issued.
    • If your supervisor changes, the new supervisor must submit a new form.

When you complete the six-month training period, arrange for the Board office to receive a
Supervisory Report form completed and signed by your supervisor to verify that you successfully completed your training. This must be submitted in the DELPROS system as a Service Request called HAD Supervisory Report Request.

When the Board office receives the verification, it will notify the International Hearing Society (IHS) that you are eligible to take the International Licensing Examination for Hearing Health Professionals. IHS will then send you instructions on registering for the exam.

When you have passed your national exam, you must also submit an application for a Hearing Aid Dispenser by Examination in DELPROS.

Requesting Extensions for Temporary Licenses

A temporary license is valid for one year from the date of issuance. Your extension request should be submitted at least 60 days before the license expiration date. The Board must approve any extension of the temporary license.

To request an extension of your temporary license, follow the below steps to submit a Service Request:

  • Log in to your DELPROS dashboard.
  • Click on SERVICE REQUEST in the blue navigation bar at the top of your screen.
  • Follow the screen prompts to select the “Request Temporary License Extension” service request type.

Examination Applicants

If you are applying by Examination, the following items are required in addition to the items in the Requirements for All Applicants section above:

  • An official score report proving that you passed the Hearing Aid Dispenser national examination, sent directly from the testing service to the Board office. If Delaware approved you to take the exam, IHS will send your score report to the Board office.
  • An official transcript, sent directly from your high school to the Board office, showing that you have a high school diploma, or
  • copy of your GED.

Reciprocity Applicants

If you are applying by Reciprocity, the following items are required in addition to the items in the Requirements for All Applicants section above.

  • If you have five years experience, you must:
  • Submit a notarized statement from your employer(s) totaling five years experience. The statement should include details such as names and dates and the kind of experience you received. For self employment, submit tax form Schedule Cs.
  • If you do not have five years experience, you must:
  • Submit copies of the licensing law and rules and regulations from each jurisdiction where you hold a current license so the Board can determine if the state(s) have requirements similar to Delaware.
