Applying to Sit for the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX)

The Board of Nursing must approve you to sit the NCLEX exam for Practical or Registered Nurses (NCLEX-PN or NCLEX-RN).

To apply to take the required exam(s), you must first create a DELPROS user account.  Go to the DELPROS online portal, and then click on Apply/Manage a License and Service Requests. If you:

  • are already an existing user, log in with your email address and password under the existing user section.
  • have not yet created a DELPROS user account, click on REGISTER.

After creating your user account or logging into the DELPROS online portal, you may begin your application for licensure to take the required exam(s).

When the Board has reviewed and approved your application, you will receive an email notification stating you have been approved to sit for the exam.

Registering for the NCLEX Exam

Register for the NCLEX online on the Pearson Vue website as soon as you are ready to test. For more information about the examination process, refer to the NCLEX Candidate Bulletin.

  • When all required documents are received, reviewed and approved, the Board office notifies Pearson Vue that you are eligible to take the exam provided you have already registered with Pearson Vue. The Board office cannot make you eligible until you have registered.
  • If you are eligible, Pearson Vue sends you an Authorization to Test (ATT) letter by email. If you do not receive an ATT, contact Pearson Vue. The Board office has no information about the status of your ATT form.
  • The Board office will notify you if you are not eligible to test.

Re-Taking the NCLEX Exam

You have a total of five years from the date you graduated to pass the NCLEX exam for licensure.

If you have failed the exam and need approval to re-take it, you must go to DELPROS and log in to your e-License Dashboard. Click on Service Request in the top navigation bar, then click APPLY FOR A NEW SERVICE REQUEST and select the Request for Re-Examination service request type option.

You must wait at least 45 days before you can re-take the exam. You must re-register with Pearson Vue and pay the full examination fee again.

  • If two years (24 months) or more have elapsed since your graduation, you are required to submit evidence of completing an NCLEX review course within the previous six months.
  • To be acceptable, the course must include a test(s) and provide either a certificate or letter from the provider as proof of completion. (An email or payment receipt from the course provider is not sufficient.)
  • Before enrolling, make sure that the course meets these requirements.
  • To find a course, we suggest you check with your school of nursing, visit NCSBN Learning Extension at learningext.com or search on the internet.

After review and approval of your request, you will receive an email notification for approval to re-take the NCLEX Exam.

After Passing the NCLEX Exam

Allow up to two weeks after you take the exam for the Board office to receive your official examination score. When the Board office receives your passing score and validates that you have met all requirements for licensure, your license will be issued.

You will receive an email notification stating your license has been issued including any additional details about license renewal and/or continuing education requirements.
