Continuing Education and Audit Information



How to Request Continuing Education (CE) Approval

CE course providers may request to have CE courses approved by the Board of Nursing. You must use the DELPROS online portal to request approval of a CE course(s) that you want to provide to licensees (providers). For more information on how to submit a request, see the Nursing Service Request webpage.


Continuing Education Requirement

Active nursing professionals must complete approved continuing education (CE) during each full licensure renewal period. If you are an:

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) – you must complete 30 contact hours during your renewal period. Your renewal period will fall in one of the following:
    • March 1 to February 28 (expiration date) of the previous odd-numbered years (2017-2019, etc.)
    • June 1 to May 31 (expiration date) of the previous odd-numbered years (2017-2019, etc.)
    • October 1 to September 30 (expiration date) of the previous odd-numbered years (2017-2019, etc.)
  • Active Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)– you must complete 24 contact hours during the following renewal period:
    • March 1 to February 28 of the previous even-numbered years (2018-2020, etc.).

At least 3 of these contact hours must be in the area of substance abuse.

All contact hours must be earned through an approved method or by approved provider.

Entering Continuing Education in the CE Tracker

Continuing Education (CE) is tracked in DELPROS, the Delaware Professional Regulation Online Service. To enter your CE, you must first create a DELPROS user account.  Go to the DELPROS online portal, and then click on Apply/Manage a License and Service Requests. If you:

  • are already an existing user, log in with your email address and password under the existing user section.
  • have not yet created a DELPROS user account, click on REGISTER.

After creating your user account or logging into the DELPROS online portal, you may begin entering your CE.

  • Click on the CONTINUING EDUCATION link in the dark blue banner at the top of the page
  • Click on ADD COURSE button
  • After choosing your profession, complete the other fields and click on SAVE
  • You will get a message of Success if the information you entered was created successfully
  • Click on CONTINUE to add more courses, upload documents, or delete entries if you made an error

When you are done, click on your Dashboard on the dark blue banner at the top of the page to renew your license or choose another service.


Practice Requirement

Active nursing professionals are required to give evidence of practice or employment within the previous five years before the renewal. To meet the practice requirement, show proof you have completed 1 of the following 2 options:

1.  Practice hours:

  • 1000 hours of nursing practice within the past five years before the renewal
  • 400 hours of nursing practice within the past two years before the renewal

To submit your practice hours, complete the top portion of the Nursing Audit Verification of Nursing Practice/Employment form and submit the form to your employer(s) who can verify your practice/employment. The form must be submitted to the Board by your employer.

2.  Nursing refresher course completed within the past two years:

  •   Upload a copy of your certificate of completion

In the event no refresher course is available, the Board may consider alternate methods of evaluating current knowledge. You may submit an alternate supervised practice plan with written evidence of completion from the nursing administration of an agency or facility.

General Audit Information

Random audits are performed by the Board to ensure compliance with the license requirements. Licensee holders selected for the random audit must verify that they have maintained the required CE and any other information required by the Board to confirm their continued eligibility for the license. For complete information, see Section 9.6 of the Board’s Rules and Regulations.


Audit Requirement

Do not upload any CE certificates or practice requirement documentation into DELPROS unless notified that you have been selected for audit.

If you are selected for audit, you must:

  • upload a copy of the certificate of attendance or completion for each CE course that you entered in the CE Tracker in DELPROS
  • upload or request your employer to submit one of the 2 options showing proof of practice listed in the Practice Requirement section above.
